Synopsis:

Like most other Japanese businessmen, Sasaki Hiroyuki – Dad – commutes to work every day on crowded Tokyo trains. Married to housewife Megumi – Mom – he leaves early and comes home late. This lifestyle does little to promote a bond with his two sons, Taka (18) and Kenji (11). Kenji, meanwhile, is a sensitive boy who has a secret desire to play the piano, an instrument Dad believes is only for girls.

The story, set in contemporary Tokyo, begins like any normal day, with Dad preparing to depart for work. Unlike other days, however, on this day Dad will unexpectedly lose his job. Facing totally unfamiliar circumstances, Dad decides not to tell Mom and to enter the world of the secretly unemployed. These are people who “save face” by concealing their unfortunate reality from family and friends while they look for new employment. With hope and a stoic commitment to carry the burden alone, Dad departs each day “for work,” when, in fact, he is killing time in shopping malls and parks.

Paralleling Dad’s plight is Kenji’s story. Intimidated at school and forced to bring money for school bullies, Kenji is also concealing another truth. He is secretly using his karate tuition to pay for lessons on the piano, something he loves and does exceptionally well at. Each morning at breakfast, Dad and Kenji lie to Mom to maintain their secret lives. Questions about work, school and karate receive answers that avoid the truth.

Dad is eventually forced to accept a low-paying job that lacks prestige and is physically demanding: he becomes a janitor at a shopping mall near Kenji’s school. Dad still refuses to tell Mom about his new job. Thus, he continues to leave for work and to return home in his business suit. Kenji’s clean karate uniform, however, convinces Mom that he may not be training at all. One day after his janitorial work, Dad follows Kenji and discovers the truth. His blatant lying infuriates Dad, who bans him from both karate and the piano.

But Kenji’s problems are just starting. He is again confronted by the bullies who demand the money that Kenji “owes” them. Unable to pay, Kenji find himself in a life-threatening situation. Only Dad can avert the situation… but in saving his son, both Dad’s job and his falsehoods will be revealed.

Bunshiro (Takuya Ishida) is a young samurai, highly skilled in swordsmanship but low in status. Recovering from a failed love affair Shiyori heads to the country, in the company of best friend and bad girl Aiko. Having taken a long soak in the hot spring they retire to their respective cabins. They soon discover that the tranquil village is the home of a cult with a fetish for cutting off female legs. Trying to escape they are split up and keep in touch via their mobile phones. Raised by her senile grandmother (Kusamura Reiko), troubled young woman Minato (Horikita Maki) lives a dark and lonely life. Waiting in the Dark is based on a novel by Otsuichi. Also known as Kurai Tokoro de Machiawase, Waiting in the Dark is directed by Tengan Daisuke and stars up-and-coming Taiwanese actor Wilson Chen. Takeru returns to his small hometown to attend a Buddhist ceremony honoring his deceased mother. His older brother, Minoru is the one that got Takeru to return to his roots for his mother’s ceremony.

Takeru left his hometown and family many years ago to live in Tokyo. Since that time, he became a successful photographer, while his brother Mineru, was left behind to run their family’s modest gas station business.

When Takeru first arrived back in his hometown, he learned that his ex-girlfriend, Chie, is now working for their family gas station business. He watches his timid older brother work talk with Chie and instantly feels jealousy. That evening Takeru asks Mineru if he could take Chie home, which Mineru agrees to good-naturedly. He even gives Takeru money to buy dinner. Takeru and Chie soon end up back at her apartment and the intimacy that they shared years ago are quickly rekindled.

The next day, at the insistence of Mineru, they all go together to the area known as “Hasumi Gorge,” a beautiful mountainous area with a river and an old suspension bridge. On that fateful day, Chie tries to cross the swaying suspension bridge with Mineru closely behind her, but falls to her death.

Mineru is now on trial for the murder of Chie and his younger brother Takeru must now tie the pieces together to find out his innocence or guilt.

Inheriting the Samurai Spirit, Otokojuku is a private boys school to nurture true men. As usual, 1st-year students enroll this year. What awaits them is grilling training by Drill Master Onihige. In this sequel to Ringu (1998), Mai Takano is trying to learn more about the death of her boyfriend, Ryuji.
